Bureau of Indian Affairs Reforestation Policies and Programs


Within the Bureau of Indian Affairs the Branch of Forestry has responsibility for the preservation, production, regulation and development of timber, water, wildlife, and other values of forested lands held in trust by the Federal Government for the American Indians. These responsibilities are limited only to the extent that such action is in the best interest of the trust estate and the Indian people. The execution of this responsibility is complicated by many variations in geographic location, climatic zones, vegetative types, cultural attitudes, and economic goals from reservation to reservation. All areas within the BIA are confronted with the need for a high degree of flexibility in the management of Indian lands as exemplified by their reforestation concepts and policies. To satisfy local reforestation needs the Albuquerque Area has developed an efficient, mid-size, quality containerized seedling operation, the core of which is the greenhouse facility.
