Use of shrubs on mine spoils

Mine disturbances can often be revegetated through natural plant succession. Plants that spread well by natural seeding can be used to seed mine spoils. Transplanting shrubs and herbs on mine sites hastens plant establishment and improves productivity and species diversity. However, shrub species differ in their ability to establish and survive as transplant stock. Therefore, planting sites must be prepared to accommodate direct seeding or transplanting. Environmental conditions of the planting site dictate the type of material and methods of planting. Existing herbaceous vegetation must be controlled to allow shrub seedlings to become established.
