Provence Testing Mexican Pines in the United States and Brazil


The flora of Mexico, including many forest tree species, is noted for its great diversity. As a result of a wide variety of environmental conditions, selection forces operating for millions of years in combination with frequent hybridization and introgression have created a wealth of inter- and intra-specific variation. In recent years, forest geneticists have recognized the potential value of this material for use in Mexico and other regions where suitable local tree species are lacking. Consequently, several programs havebeen initiated throughout the world to evaluate and utilize Mexican tree species, especially the pines. One such project involved the N. C. State Industry Tree Improvement Program.
