Tree Planters Notes' is Back!
The issue of Tree Planters' Notes, Volume 51(1), due to be published in June, 2005 marks a resumption of this publication after a lapse of a few years. Because of a series of personnel changes and staff reorganizations and reductions within the Reforestation, Nursery, and Genetic Resources Staff of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, State and Private Forestry, we delayed publication of Tree Planters' Notes (TPN). One result of this delay was the Government Printing Office (GPO) dropping TPN from its periodicals list, canceling existing subscriptions, and erasing the subscriber list from its database. After we learned of this cancellation, we seriously considered ceasing publication of TPN. The reforestation and conservation community, however, provided strong support for continuing TPN as an outlet for information and research results that have direct application in the production and outplanting of reforestation and conservation plant material. In fact, one of the most ardent supporters of TPN, Dr. Robin Rose, Oregon State University, agreed to become the Managing Editor!
So, TPN is back, under a new Managing Editor, and looking to reconnect with both contributors and readers. The current goal is to publish TPN twice a year and distribute it to potential readers using the subscriber list of Forest Nursery Notes, which is a free publication of the USDA Forest Service, State and Private Forestry. Copies of TPN will be distributed at no cost for a year or two; after that time, we will request that GPO again begin offering paid subscriptions to TPN.
Subscriptions to Forest Nursery Notes (and complimentary copies of TPN) can be obtained by contacting:

As Manager of TPN, I would like to thank those who continued to express the need for this publication as a source of information for the reforestation and conservation community. I hope you will continue to give us suggestions and comments on improving this publication to meet your needs and. especially, I HOPE YOU WILL SHARE INFORMATION AND EXPERTISE BY CONTRIBUTING ARTICLES TO TPN.
Lastly, this issue of TPN contains great articles on a variety of topics from authors who waited far, far longer than anyone expected would be required to restart this publication (and with more patience than we deserved). Thank you, authors!
