• Forest Nursery Manual (1984)

  This manual presents information about bareroot nursery practices and research in the northwestern United States and Canada. The 30 chapters, written by leading scientist and nursery managers, emphasizes the major stages of seedling production-selecting and developing the optimal site, assuring seed quality and vigorous early seedling growth, managing the soil and water, culturing bareroot seedlings, and harvesting and outplanting.

• Nursery Manual for Native Plants: A Guide for Tribal Nurseries, Volume 1: Nursery Management (2009)

  This handbook covers all aspects of managing a native plant nursery, from initial planning through crop production to establishing trials to improving nursery productivity into the future. It was written to assist Native Americans in growing native plants and draws extensively on tribal activities for the many photos and specific examples in the text.

• Woody Plant Seed Manual (2008)

  The Woody Plant Seed Manual is an update of the Seed of Woody Plants in the United States which was published back in 1974. The manual is divided into two sections. Part One consists of 7 chapters on general principles such as seed biology, harvesting, storage, testing as well as nursery practices. Part Two has been expanded to include 236 genera of native and introduced woody plants, many of which are tropical species or western natives which have become widely-used. The information on each genus is presented in the following sections: growth habit; occurrence and use; flowering and fruiting; collection, extraction and storage of seeds; pregermination treatments; germination test; and nursery practices.

• Raising Seedlings at Home (1998)

  This publication describes simple methods for growing conifers of the Pacific Northwest from seeds.

• Tropical Tree Seed Manual (2002)

  This manual provides comprehensive, internationally compiled data about tropical trees. The first part consists of nine chapters written by authorities in areas of seed biology, collection, storage, dormancy, germination, pathology, ecology, ethnobotany, and dendrology. The second part presents descriptions of 197 botanically and economically important tropical tree species.

• Forest Nursery Pests (1989)

  This handbook was prepared by a team of research scientists and pest management specialists. It includes information on diseases and insects of conifer and hardwood seedlings.

• Growing Healthy Seedlings (1990)

  This book provides an illustrated guide to the identification and management of fungi, insects, and abiotic conditions that cause problems in Northwest bareroot conifer nurseries.

• Tree Seed Technology Training Course (1994)

  This manual is intended primarily to train seed collectors, seed-plant managers, seed analysts, and nursery managers, but it can serve as a resource for any training course in forest regeneration. It includes both temperate and tropical tree species of all intended uses. The manual covers the following topics: seed biology, seed collection, seed handling, seed-quality evaluation, seed protection, seed basics for nurseries, and seed programs. It also includes practical exercises.

• Evaluating Seedling Quality (1984)

  This publication contains papers from a workshop designed to increase understanding of seedling quality and its evaluation in order to enable nursery managers and foresters to improve cultural practices and reforestation success. It brings together information on the principles, procedures, and predictive abilities of quality tests such as nutrition, morphology, and root growth potential.

• Organic Matter Management in Forest Nurseries: Theory and Practice (1995)

  This is a reference for the addition of organic amendments to forest nursery soils. It provides information on the effect of organic matter on soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. Additionally, the organic matter decomposition, use of different types, and green manure crops are discussed.

• Southern Pine Nursery Handbook (1984)

  This handbook summarizes technical information for planning, production, and management of southern pine nurseries.

• Care and Planting of Southern Pine (1996)

  This booklet is designed to encourage landowners, land managers, county foresters, forestry consultants, and nursery managers to be certain that their seedlings receive proper care.

• Southern Pine Seed Sources (2001)

  The purpose of this handbook is to guide landowners and consulting foresters in selecting appropriate seed sources for planting southern pines.

• The Thin Green Line (2005)

  The Thin Green Line symposium was held July 26-28, 2005 in Thunder Bay, Ontario and focused on the State-of-the-Art in Reforestation. This document is a compendium of invited and volunteer papers and posters presented at the symposium with the following themes: status of reforestation and afforestation around the world, nursery methods to produce target seedlings, planting and planting site treatments to optimize regeneration, and enhancing timber production and non-timber values through stand establishment.
